Description: This course will examine the competitive games of antiquity-especially athletics, chariot racing, and gladiatorial combat-and analyze the place they had in the religious and cultural lives of Greeks and Romans. Topics include athletic training, the Pan-Hellenic festivals, praise poetry, prizes, professionalism, nudity, the participation of women, amphitheaters, and the cult of violence in Rome.
