Education: Early Childhood Education: Teacher of Children with and without Disabilities, PreK–2, MEd with Initial Licensure

The Early Childhood (ECHD) graduate teacher education program leading to initial licensure, PreK–2, is a 37-credit program that consists of 13 required courses. The 13-course sequence includes a 1-credit pre-practicum and a 6-credit full-time practicum. The program can be completed full-time or part-time.

Students need to complete one of the following three tests for admission:

1. Communication and Literacy MTEL
2. GRE
3. MAT

Pre-practicum hours are done either one day a week or two half-days (with permission) when you take

  and   together. They must be taken together and are only offered in the spring.

A full-time practicum consists of 14 weeks (one full semester) of supervised student teaching. All candidates for initial licensure are required to take the full 6-credit practicum. Please note that 100 hours of the EC practicum must be completed in a PreK or K classroom, and the remaining 200 hours in a 1st or 2nd grade classroom. Students wishing to do any form of supervised practicum must apply for approval and placement the semester prior to the one in which the practicum is to take place. • Students need to take the Communication and Literacy MTEL prior to admission.
• Students need to take the Foundations of Reading MTEL after
  EDC G 646 Understanding Reading: Principles and Practices
   .
• The Early Childhood MTEL is also required. Students should take this as soon as possible.
