Description: This course surveys the art produced in northern Europe (primarily the Netherlands, France, and Germany) from the fourteenth through the sixteenth century. Lectures, readings, and discussions will stress key themes such as the role of patronage, the rise of the “self-conscious artist,” the dynamics of material and original setting, the development of new kinds of subject matter, the beginnings of printmaking, the rise of the art market, the impact of devotional practices and pilgrimage, and the use of images by religious reformers.
