ENGL 351 - Early African-American Literature 3 Credit(s) | Lecture | Course can be counted for credit once
Description: A study of the roles of early (1773-1903) African-American literature played in shaping American literary and cultural history. Through an examination of such writers as Wheatley, Equiano, Douglass, Jacobs, and Chesnutt, this course introduces students to foundational themes of African-American literature, from the black Atlantic and the trope of the “talking book” through the “tragic mulatto” and double consciousness.
