Description: This course explores an extraordinary period in the arts in which experimentation and innovation produced some of the most peculiar objects int he history of art. We shall study a wide range of media, from painting, sculpture and architecture to porcelain, furniture, wax, and shells, as well as the styles of the Rococo, Neoclassicism, and Romanticism. Since the 18th Century was an age of global expansion and cross-cultural contact, this course examines the visual and material culture of Europe specifically in relation to other parts of the world, particularly Asian and the Americas.
