Description: This course provides a survey of the tragic drama of fifth-century Athens, including the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Focus in on both artistry and social, historical and cultural context, including the interplay between the universal and the culturally specific. Performance conventions, literary genre, and the subsequent tragic tradition (especially Seneca in Rome) are also studied.
