Description: The goal of this course is to examine the individual, socio-demographic and policy factors that have given rise to this new developmental stage of “emerging adulthood.” Students will examine theories and research related to the stage of emerging adulthood with a focus on the ways in which context shapes development. Context includes both micro and macro-level influences on emerging adulthood (e.g., sociohistorical context, race/ethnicity, gender, and economic conditions). The topics include: historical comparisons of emerging adulthood; cultural, ethnic, and gender identity; family and romantic relationships; friendships; and education and career choices.
