Description: This course studies the economic, political and sociological status of African-Americans and competing explanations for the persistence of differences in unemployment, income, wealth and poverty between African-Americans and white Americans. Explanations explored include “scientific” explanations that are biological and sociological in origin; “popular” explanations derived from responses to national opinion polls on white and black racial attitudes and cultural practices; and “race-biased” explanations drawn from evidence proffered by heterodox analysts of the existence and persistence of pervasive racial discrimination in economic, political and social life.
