Description: This course examines language use in society in various contextual domains. It focuses on interactions in the classroom and local communities and the co-constructing and indexing of gendered, racial, and classed identities. The course addresses the latest theories and research in sociolinguistics and their implications. Topics include language and power, discourse and media representations, urban ethnographic studies, and ideologies of standardized languages.
