Description: This course surveys the development of the artistic style known as the Baroque as it spread from Italy throughout Europe and eventually across the world, becoming the first truly “global” artistic movement. The course examines the era’s artwork within the contexts of global exploration, commerce, colonialism, and political and religious conflict. Students will learn to recognize and interpret the formal characteristics and iconography of a range of artworks in these historical circumstances.
