Degree Requirements

Major Requirements


Complete 16 credits from twelve courses including three required courses, one applied philosophy course, two history and theory of philosophy and public policy courses, three additional philosophy electives, two public policy cognate courses from other departments, and one senior directed study.

Pass/fail: No more than one course taken pass/fail may be applied toward the major.
Residency:  At least seven courses applied toward the major, including the directed study, must be completed at UMass Boston.
Course level: No more than two 100-level courses may be applied toward the major. At least five philosophy courses applied toward the major must be at the 300-level or higher.

Applied Philosophy Course (3 Credits)


Take one course from the list below.

Additional Philosophy Electives (9 Credits)


Take three additional philosophy courses not being used for other major requirements.

Public Policy Cognate Courses (6 Credits)


Take two cognate courses with a strong emphasis on public policy from other departments and programs. The courses listed below are pre-approved for this requirement. Other courses may be taken with approval of the department.

Senior Directed Study (3 Credits)
