Program Requirements


Complete 72 credits from 22 courses including nine core courses, five research courses, five electives, two dissertation seminars, and 9 credits of dissertation research.

Doctoral candidacy: Completion of a qualifying paper.
Capstone: HIGHED 692 - Capstone in Higher Education 
Dissertation: Compose and defend a dissertation based on original research

Transfer coursework: Students can transfer a total of 12 credits: 6 from prior or concurrent coursework at other institutions and 6 from prior coursework at UMass Boston. No transfer coursework from other institutions or UMass Boston taken more than seven years before admission to the program will be accepted.
Independent study: Students can enroll in up to four independent studies (3 credit hours each).

Statute of limitations: Seven years.

Complete the four courses below and one advanced research methods course chosen in consultation with your advisor.

Electives (15 Credits)


Complete five courses chosen in consultation with the graduate program director.

Three of the electives must be interdisciplinary cognate courses.

Dissertation Seminars (6 Credits)


Dissertation Research (9 Credits)
