About College of Advancing and Professional Studies (CAPS) Courses
Some UMass Boston courses are offered through the College of Advancing and Professional Studies (CAPS). CAPS course costs differ somewhat from those shown in this chart, and CAPS courses are charged separately. Any questions please contact CAPS at 617.287.7900 or caps@umb.edu.
Certificate Students
Tuition, fees, and billing procedures for certificate students are the same as for matriculated students, unless otherwise noted.
Description of Fees
The Board of Higher Education and the University Board of Trustees determine all charges.
Application Fee
Each application for admission to the university from a student seeking a degree must be accompanied by a non-refundable application fee payment of $60(UG)/62(Grad) for domestic applicants, $100(UG)/$103(Grad) for international applicants. Checks should be made payable to The University of Massachusetts Boston, and submitted together with completed application forms.
Tuition (In-State Rate)
As a state institution, the University of Massachusetts Boston offers a low rate of tuition to all students entering from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Eligibility for admission under the low residential rate is determined according to a policy established by the Board of Trustees and detailed under the residency status section.
Non-state-supported courses
Due to budget reductions the campus is now offering many sections of courses as NonState supported courses. The fee for these courses will be equivalent to what is charged for students in a state funded course, but will appear on the bill as a separate line item charge.
Combined Mandatory Fees
Provides funding for student services on campus. Applicable to all students. This fee is a one line item charged on a per-credit basis.
Educational Operations Fee
The Educational Operations Fee provides funds for the goods and services needed to run a university. Employed students seeking employer reimbursement for this fee can obtain from the Bursar’s Office or in person at the One Stop Student Center a “support letter” describing the need for the fee and how the proceeds are used much as tuition would be at a private institution.
Other Mandatory Fees
- Combined New Student Fees is a one time fee assessed to each certificate and degree seeking student in their first semester. The fee may not be canceled or refunded unless the student withdraws prior to the first day of classes.
- Identification Fee is used to support the cost of making identification cards (with photographs); all continuing students are charged this fee each fall, and all new or re-entering students are charged the fee before the first semester of attendance.
- International Student Fee is a flat fee charged each semester to all international students holding visas.
- Medical Insurance is mandatory for all students, unless they can prove separate coverage and receive a waiver from the Bursar’s Office. The Medical Insurance waiver must be filed each academic year. Details please see “Health Insurance” below.
- Registration Fee is charged to non-degree students during each semester of registration. You will not be charged for orientation or recreation fees.
- Registrar’s Service Fee is charged each semester to non-degree students for prepayment of all record copying services. This is a life long service. You will not be charged for the copying and mailing of academic records at anytime, either for personal use of for forwarding to third parties.
- CEHD E-Portfolio Fee is a one time fee for all entering students in the College of Education and Human Development to cover the cost of electronic portfolios.
- SGISD E-Portfolio Fee is a one time fee for all entering students in the School for Global Inclusion and Social Development to cover the cost of electronic portfolios.
- CM Curriculum and Service Fee is used to support the College of Management’s educational mission. This fee will be assessed per semester to all undergraduate students with more than 60 credits and all graduate students.
- CNHS Curriculum and Service Fee is used to support the College of Nursing’s educational mission. This fee will be assessed per semester to all undergraduate students with more than 60 credits and all graduate students.
- CNHS - EHS Curriculum and Service Fee is used to support the EHS program’s educational mission. This fee will be assessed per semester to all undergraduate students with more than 60 credits and all graduate students.
- Commencement Fee is one time fee to seniors or students in the year of their anticipated graduation. To change your year of graduation, you must contact the Registrar’s Office.
Optional Fees
Charges for optional fees appear on the bills of matriculated students, if you choose to waive/add any optional fee, you can add/subtract the amount under deductions/additions at the bottom of the bill and return it to the Bursar’s office by the due date of the bill on which the charges appear. You can also waive MassPIRG Fee and Mass Media Fee on WISER.
- MassPIRG Fee supports the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group, a student-interest advocacy group.
- Mass Media Fee provides sustained funding for the operating costs of UMass Boston’s student newspaper.
- Renewable Energy Fee will be used specifically for renewable energy initiatives on the UMass Boston campus. The revenue will be administered by students through the UMass Renewable Energy Trust (UMRET).
- Parking Pass please contact the Parking & Transportation Office in the Quinn Administration Building or call them at 617.287.5040 for information about Semester Parking Passes. A student may request that the Parking & Transportation department bill the parking pass to his or her account. It will then be treated as part of the student’s bill and will be subject to late fees if not being paid by the due date of the bill.
Health Insurance
<Effective August 1, 2015, Blue Cross Blue Shield will be the NEW student health insurance carrier for Academic Year 2015/2016>
In accordance with the State of Massachusetts “Student Health Program - SHP” (previously called QSHIP), students enrolled in 75% of the full-time curriculum in any Massachusetts institution of higher education are required to participate in a school-sponsored qualifying SHP or an alternate health plan with comparable coverage. Students who are at least 75% of the full time curriculum are automatically billed for the SHP. Please note, the following does not meet the state criteria for “comparable” insurance coverage:
- Foreign (international) health insurance coverage.
- Mass Health Limited
- Health Safety Net
- Children’s Medical Security Plan
Please note all students billed for the Student Health Insurancemust must either “Confirm the enrollment” or “Waive with comparable coverage” via WISER. Non-action by the deadline will result in enrollment by default.
*Deadline to waive Fall 2015 Health Insurance online is 10/01/2015. (Failure to complete the Health Insurance Waiver on WISER/Finances by due date on bill may result in non-waivable late payment fees.)
Please contact University Health Plans (UHP) for questions relative to coverage and benefits at 800-437-6448 or access their website.
Questions regarding waivers please contact Bursar’s office at 617-287-5350 or send email to Bursar@umb.edu.
**International students must contact the Bursar’s Office to waive the insurance.**
Program Fee
Each degree-seeking graduate student is required to maintain continuous registration until the degree that the student is seeking has been formally awarded. If a graduate student does not register for course, thesis, or dissertation credits during any semester, the student must pay a program fee to maintain continuous registration. The program fee for all students is $216.00 per semester and is paid to the One Stop Student Center. Note: Payment of the program fee does not extend the time limit for completion of the degree. Any questions regarding the program fee should go through the One Stop Student Center.
Tuition Surcharge for Credit Hours in Excess of Degree Requirements
The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education requires all universities and state colleges to assess a tuition surcharge to students who exceed 118 percent of required credits in an academic degree program. This surcharge applies to in-state undergraduates and students enrolled through the New England Regional Exchange Program and is equal to the non-resident tuition rate per credit.
- Students who transferred to UMass Boston are exempt.
- Transfer credits completed after enrolling at UMass Boston are excluded from the total of credits earned.
- Credits earned for programs requiring more than 120 credits are excluded. For further information, contact the Registrar’s Office at 617.287.6200.
Cost of Attendance
A budget for the cost of study at UMass Boston may be compared to any general budget, such as a household or personal budget. Within that budget, a number of factors may change due to rising labor costs, changes in the costs of goods and services, and other influences.
When individual applications for financial aid are considered, the university uses a sample institutional budget estimating the average cost of attendance. Copies of this sample budget are available from Financial Aid Services.
