Description: This course examines our interactional use of language in society via various contextual domains such as language in the media, language and politics, and the co-constructing and indexing of gendered, racial, and classed identities. The course will address the latest theories and research in sociolinguistics and its applications and implications for both the language learning classroom and local communities. Topics include language and power, discourse and media representations, interactional contexts, urban ethnographic studies, and ideological notions of standardized languages.
Enrollment Requirements: Prerequisites: APLING 601 and APLING 603 and APLING 605
