Description: This course examines the historical, cultural, and aesthetic importance of visual images in shaping ideas about empire, race, gender, sexuality, class, work, and nation in American history, from the mid-nineteenth century through the twenty-first. We will explore how different historical contexts change how and why we look as consumers. We will learn how to interpret and analyze different forms of visual media, including motion pictures, political cartoons, live performance, photographs, and print advertising.
