The Flex MBA program consists of a minimum of 33 credits; 3 required courses and 8 elective courses. The Flex combines a focused management curriculum and allows students to customize experience by completing one or more of 15 specializations.
The program can be completed full-time or part-time, with classes that meet in the evenings, or fully online. Scheduling is highly flexible, with most classes meeting once per week. Students can join the program in the fall or spring semesters.

Prerequisite courses
Pending a review of prior academic course work, students may be required to take up to 8 prerequisite courses. View our pre-requisite waiver policy here.

Electives and MBA Specializations
Students may choose 8 elective courses. Students may choose electives from 15 optional MBA specializations. Specializations are completed by taking a group of designated electives as part of the general MBA elective requirement. Completing a specialization does not extend the program, and students can specialize in more than one area.
Accounting
Students in the accounting specialization must complete four courses from the list below:
Business Analytics
Students in the business analytics specialization must complete a total of four courses:
Entrepreneurship
Students in the entrepreneurship specialization must complete a total of four courses:
Environmental Management
Students in the environmental management specialization must complete three courses from the list below:
Finance
Students in the finance specialization must complete four courses from the list below:
Health Care Management
Students in the health care management specialization must complete three courses from the list below:
Health Care Informatics
Students in the health care informatics specialization must complete the following four courses:
Human Resources Management
Students in the HR management specialization must complete three courses from the list below:
Information Systems
Students in the information systems specialization must complete four courses from the list below:
International Management
Students in the international management specialization must complete four courses from the list below, and must choose courses from at least 3 of the 4 areas listed.
Internet Marketing
Students in the internet marketing specialization must complete four courses from the list below:
Leadership and Organizational Change
Students in the leadership and organizational change specialization must complete a total of four courses:
Marketing
Students in the marketing specialization must complete four courses from the list below:
Nonprofit Management
Students in the nonprofit management specialization must complete four courses, as follows:
Supply Chain and Service Management
Students in the supply chain and service management specialization must complete three courses from the list below:
Admission Requirements
Applicants must submit the following materials:
- Online application form with application fee.
- International graduate applicants must also submit additional documentation. Click here for more details.
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended, both undergraduate and graduate. Applicants must have the equivalent of a United States bachelor’s degree to be eligible to apply. All transcripts are required, regardless of whether credits were transferred.
- All non-US transcripts must be evaluated by Center for Educational Documentation - CED - located at www.cedevaluations.com. We require a course-by-course evaluation report. Applicants must submit the evaluation package as well as a separate copy of their official transcript.
- Current professional resume, highlighting professional and academic contributions/qualifications.
- Exam Scores Required:
- Official GMAT or GRE scores. (Required for Global MBA. Check eligibility to waive for all other programs).
- Official TOEFL or IELTS scores. Our minimum TOEFL score is 90 and our minimum IELTS score is 6.5. (Required for all applicants that submit Non-United States academic transcripts - unless stated as exempt on our international graduate applicants page- LEARN MORE HERE).
- (2) letters of recommendation from professional or academic references
- Applicants must provide the name and email address for (2) references as part of the online application. Those references will receive an email notification directing them to a secure site to submit their recommendation. If references prefer to type a traditional letter, it should be sent as a PDF attachment referencing the applicant’s name, student ID number and program of interest, to GADocs@umb.edu.
- Essay (please note that there is also a standard essay prompt in the online application. You do not have to respond to that prompt - only the one below.)
- Part 1 (300 words): Why are you interested in attending graduate school at UMass Boston?
- Part 2 (1,200 words): State a current issue, problem or topic from your intended field of study (This can be specific to your country, state or local community) and discuss your strategic plan as to how you would address issue and how attending graduate school at UMass Boston will aid you in your pursuits.
